鵜沢さんも言われているように、「一斉暗記」は大きな声を出すことで大きな効果を生みますが、現在、全ての生徒が大きな声を出してくれているわけではありません。小学生は割と大きな声で読んでくれる子が多いのですが、年齢が上がっていくと、余り声を出さなくなる傾向があるので、逆に中高生の方が大きな声で暗記が出来るように持っていきたいですね。

Last month America had an election. They chose the new president. We all know who won. Barack Obama won. Many people watched this election. Most people in other countries are happy with the result. Obama is a very different person from George Bush and Bill Clinton. He was born in Hawaii to an American mother and a Kenyan father. He went to school in Indonesia and Hawaii. He has travelled to Europe and Africa. He has helped poor people in Chicago. He was a university teacher, too. He has a simple message. “We can change America.”
The American election was different this time because more people voted this time (62%) than last time (55%). People were really interested in this election. This election made democracy interesting again. In Japan 67% voted in the last election. That’s a good number for a modern, developed country. Australia has a 100% turnout. “Turnout” means the number of voers who “come out” to vote on the election day. But in Australia it is illegal NOT to vote! So that’s why they have 100% turnout. If you don’t vote, you have to pay a 20 dollar penalty. That’s about 1,600 yen.
Some countries try to make students interested in elections. For example, they do something very interesting in Finland. When there is an election, the politicians also visit Finnish schools. They talk to students and students can vote. Their votes do not count in the real election but it makes them interested in the process.
Japan is interesting, too. Schools have elections!
I was very surprised when I first saw this. Even Elementary students have elections! I didn’t have any elections in my schools in England or Norway. I was amazed when fifth grade students came into the sixth grade classroom at lunch time. They stood at the front and gave a speech. The students were standing for different positions. Each student had a friend, “a seconder” who also gave a speech supporting them. It was very interesting. I thought those students were very brave to stand in front of older students and give a speech. I would have been very nervouse talking in front of my own class let alone a class of older students! All students could vote and I think it was a good expereince for all students to go through. They can get used to elections and feel that they are normal and important, maybe they will also think that they can stand in real elections, too! I hope England can copy some of those ideas. I think our tournout is about 57%. We need more interesting politicians!
